At the centre of the lagoon there is Orbetello situated between Giannella and Feniglia, where two strips of land connect the coast with Argentario. This city has very old origins with testimony of the Etruscan settlement of VII century B.C.

For centuries is has represented a valid navy landing post, where it was popular for the exchange of goods and where it was possible to concentrate military defence structures as with the rest of the territory.

In the past it had been under the control of the Romans, Bizantini, Longobardi as well as the powerful Orsini and Aldobrandeschi family during the late medieval period.

From XVI until the beginning of XVIII the Spanish made Orbetello the capital of the state of the Spanish Royalty.During the Restauration period it became an annexation of Tuscany territory.
