This Etruscan, Roman and Medieval city, birthplace of the Aldobrandeschi family and home of Gregorio VII, is wrapped up in the rich vegetation typical of the area and defended by a city wall which is dominated by the Rock of Aldobrandesca.In the splendid square there are notable monuments such as the Archive palace (Palazzetto dell’Archivio), the Praetorial Palace (Palazzo Pretoria), the Palazzo Bourbon del Monte, the Loggio del Capitano, the small and charming Church of Santa Maria with the IX century ciborium, the damaged church of Mamiliano, Saint draconian which the tradition tells of his fall into a barrel full of nails, in the area of Sovana.

On the outskirts of the city centre we find the imposing Roman Cathedral.   Nearby the great Rupestrian Etruscan necropolis with the Tomb of Sirena, the Tomb of Ildebranda, the Tomb of Sileno, of the Colombari, the Tomb of Pola.
